Nurses Misty Guerrero from Durham Regional's Emergency Department and Jane Rigsbee from Davis Ambulatory Surgical Center were named to Triangle Business Journal’ 2013 list of Health Care Heroes. This award honors leaders of all segments of the Triangle's health care industry to recognize its top performers and their extraordinary achievements.
Durham Regional named one of Triangle Business Journal's 2012 Healthiest Employers of the Triangle Awards. This award recognizes companies that commit to making wellness a priority while proactively shaping the health of their employees.
Durham Regional has been awarded an “A” for safety by independent national nonprofit the Leapfrog Group. The group issues grades A-F to U.S. hospitals based on preventable medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections. Durham Regional Hospital has been awarded Stage 6 designation by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). This award recognizes health care organizations that have effectively adopted electronic medical records relative to the HIMSS Analytics adoption model. Durham Regional earns AHA's Mission: Lifeline Bronze Quality Achievement Award
Durham Regional recently earned the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® Bronze Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes Durham Regional’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients that effectively improves the survival and care of STEMI (ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction) patients.
This award highlights the efforts from first medical contact (usually Emergency Medical Services) to device activation. Systems of care have been developed that close the gap of timely access to appropriate, life-saving treatments. Read more in our news section.

This event brings together the leaders of all segments of the Triangle's health care industry to recognize its top performers and their extraordinary achievements.
National Awards for Diversity Leadership
Durham Regional Hospital participated in the Institute for Diversity in Health Management’s "State of Health Care Diversity and Disparities: A Benchmark Study of U.S. Hospitals."
The survey assessed diversity initiatives in four categories: expanding the diversity of the organization’s governance body and leadership team; effectively engaging the diverse communities that the organization serves; strengthening a diverse workplace throughout the organization; and delivering culturally and linguistically competent patient care throughout the organization.
Durham Regional Hospital, one of 182 participating hospitals, was named "Best in Class for Strengthening the Work Culture" and "Promising Practices for Governance Body and Leadership Team."
The Duke Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery is an ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence
The Duke Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery at Durham Regional Hospital has been designated as an American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence (BSCOE).
The ASMBS BSCOE designation recognizes surgical programs with a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery. The program has been continuously credentialed since 2006. The recertification process occurs every three years.
To earn BSCOE recertification, the Duke Center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery underwent a series of site inspections during which all aspects of the program’s surgical processes and outcomes were closely examined.
2010 Women in Business Awards
Lynne Mitchell, assistant director of human resources at Durham Regional Hospital, has won a Triangle Business Journal Women in Business award in the mentor category.
The Triangle Business Journal’s Women in Business awards honor the most accomplished businesswomen in the Triangle. Mitchell was nominated for her dedication to the advancement and growth of Durham Regional Hospital employees.
American College of Radiology Accreditation
Durham Regional Hospital’s ultrasound department has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation as the result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
The ACR awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer review evaluation of the practice. Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. They assess both the qualifications of the staff and equipment.
American College of Cardiology Foundation’s 2010 ACTION Registry-GWTG Gold Performance Achievement Award
Durham Regional Hospital is one out of only 135 hospitals nationwide to receive the American College of Cardiology Foundation’s ACTION Registry-Get With The Guidelines Gold Performance Achievement Award for 2010.
The award recognizes our commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients, and signifies that we have reached an aggressive goal of treating coronary artery disease patients with 85 percent compliance to core standard levels of care outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.
To receive the ACTION Registry-GWTG Gold Performance Achievement Award, hospitals have to consistently follow the treatment guidelines in ACTION Registry-GWTG for 24 consecutive months. These include aggressive use of medications like cholesterol-lowering drugs, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, aspirin, and anticoagulants in the hospital.

Margie Muir, RN, MSN, CNML, nursing program manager, has been with Durham Regional hospital since 1997 and was nominated because of her work with the GEMS program (Graduates Engaged, Mastering, and Succeeding).

Outpatient Nutrition and Diabetes Education Center Receives Recognition from the American Diabetes Association
Durham Regional Hospital’s Outpatient Nutrition and Diabetes Education Center diabetes self-management education program has been awarded continued recognition from the American Diabetes Association (ADA). The program was originally recognized in February of 2001.
The ADA Education Recognition effort is a voluntary process that assures that approved education programs have met the national standards for diabetes self-management education programs.
According to the ADA, programs that achieve recognition status have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide state-of-the-art information about diabetes management for participants.
Durham Rehabilitation Institute Receives Top Performer Award
Durham Rehabilitation Institute (DRI), located on the seventh floor of Durham Regional Hospital, has been named a top performer by the Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation (UDSMR).
DRI was recognized as being in the top 10 percent for patient outcomes when compared to 805 other inpatient rehabilitation facilities across the country.
The UDSMR documents the severity of patient disability and the results of medical rehabilitation in a uniform way. Establishing a common language promotes communication about disability across disciplines and provides a basis for comparison of rehabilitation outcomes.
North Carolina Prevention Partners (NCPP) Red Apple Status
Durham Regional Hospital achieved Red Apple Status in February 2010. This designation by the North Carolina Prevention Partners (NCPP) signifies a work environment that encourages healthy choices.
Since 2009, Durham Regional Hospital and Duke Medicine have worked to incorporate NCPP criteria into our food offerings. These criteria include five principles of a healthy food environment: providing access to healthy foods; using the pricing structure to incentivize customers to purchase healthy items; using marketing techniques to promote healthy foods; using the benefit design and wellness incentives to encourage behavior change; and implementing an education campaign to promote the healthy environment with staff and visitors.
Post-Graduate Year One Residency Program Accreditation
Durham Regional Hospital’s pharmacy department attained accreditation for the post-graduate year one (PGY-1) residency program from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).
The purpose of a pharmacy residency is to prepare pharmacists for practice by offering them experience working with a wide range of patients and disease states. Learn more about the residency program.
Silver Performance Achievement Award
Durham Regional Hospital received the American College of Cardiology Foundation’s NCDR ACTION Registry-GWTG Silver Performance Achievement Award in 2009 -- one of only 36 hospitals nationwide to do so.
The award recognizes Durham Regional Hospital’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients.
Lincoln Pharmacy Awards
The Lincoln Community Health Center Pharmacy, an in-kind service of Durham Regional Hospital, was awarded four awards by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services/Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), including the Clinical Pharmacy Services Improvement Award, Health Outcomes Management Award, Life Saving Patient Safety Award, and highest PSPC Performance Award.
The Clinical Pharmacy Services Improvement Award recognizes teams of health care providers that have successfully installed clinical pharmacy services since the beginning of the collaborative, and were able to demonstrate improvement in one area of service.
The Health Outcome Management Award recognizes teams of health care providers that successfully gathered patient health outcomes data during the collaborative and reported health outcomes measures for at least nine consecutive months.
The Life Saving Patient Safety Award recognizes teams that established systems and processes for detecting, identifying, and preventing adverse drug events or harm caused by medication use.
The PSPC Performance Award recognizes teams that demonstrated overall excellence during the collaborative.
2009 Great 100 Nurses
Cathy Oakley, RN, vascular access services team, Melanie Mabrey, RN, MSN, ACNP, inpatient diabetes coordinator, and JoAnna Gontarz, MSN, RN, CNE, Watts School of Nursing instructor were named to the 2009 list of Great 100 Nurses.

NCNA Hallmarks of Healthy Workplaces
Durham Regional Hospital’s endoscopy department was awarded Hallmarks of Healthy Workplaces recognition for a second time in 2010. According to surveyors, endoscopy services staff “seemed very engaged with providing quality care to their patients and in promoting nursing excellence in terms of professional and personal development. We also noted the support and caring as well between the nurses and surgical technicians.”
The North Carolina Nurses Association named the James E. Davis Ambulatory Surgical Center (DASC) a second-time recipient of its Hallmarks of Healthy Workplaces award in 2009. This exceptional facility was recognized for creating positive work environments for registered nurses. Durham Regional Hospital’s post-anesthesia care unit also received this honor in 2007.
2009 40 Under 40
Katie Galbraith, MBA, chief hospital operations and business development officer at Durham Regional Hospital, has won a Triangle Business Journal 40 Under 40 award.
The Triangle Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 leadership awards honor the brightest, most promising young business people under the age of 40 in the Triangle. Winners must hold a role of importance in their organization, have made significant achievements in their career in 2008, and have had substantial involvement in community service outside of their job responsibilities.
Marketing Awards
Durham Regional Hospital has been nationally recognized by the 2009 Aster Awards Program for excellence in medical marketing. Durham Regional won three bronze awards for their website, www.durhamregional.org, consumer health publication, Your Health, and a television commercial.
Additionally, Durham Regional Hospital won two 2009 Service Industry Awards: a gold for the Spirit of Durham Regional Part II video and a merit award for the television commercial.
Outstanding Amy V. Cockcroft Nurse Leadership Award
Peggy Baker, RN, MSN, Ed D, associate chief nursing officer at Durham Regional Hospital, was awarded the “Outstanding Amy V. Cockcroft Nurse Leadership Award” by the Center for Nursing Leadership University of South Carolina College of Nursing in 2009.
The Amy V. Cockcroft Nursing Leadership Program is a yearlong program that prepares nurse executive leaders to meet the increasingly urgent demands of today’s health care organizations.
2009 Health Care Hero
Louise Saladino, RN, BSN, MHA, nurse manager of critical care at Durham Regional Hospital, has won a Triangle Business Journal 2009 Health Care Heroes Award in the category of health care manager.
Saladino was nominated by two coworkers for her leadership and dedication to patients while improving the critical care unit during a multi-million dollar renovation.
Magnet Designation
Durham Regional Hospital achieved Magnet designation for excellence in nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center in 2008. Only 5 percent of the nation's hospitals have earned this designation, the highest level of national recognition to health care organizations that demonstrate sustained excellence in nursing care.
AARP Best Employers for Workers Over 50
Durham Regional Hospital ranked 31st on the 2007 list of AARP best employers for workers over 50. Employers are chosen by the following criteria: companies’ recruiting practices; opportunities for training, education, and career development; workplace accommodations; alternative work options, such as flexible scheduling, job sharing, and phased retirement; employee health and pension benefits; retiree benefits; and age diversity of the workforce.
