In the Community

For more than 35 years, Durham Regional Hospital has been committed to caring for residents of Durham and the surrounding communities. Our employees devote time, money, and lots of energy to causes throughout this community -- because this is where we live, too.

We’re your friends and your neighbors, and our commitment to caring extends far beyond the hospital walls by giving back and through sponsorships. We also have an active volunteer program.

Giving Back

Durham Regional Hospital is proud to be a part of our community. We give back by partnering with a number of charitable organizations. Here are a few of the organizations we have supported recently.

American Heart AssociationDuring the fall of 2011, Durham Regional Hospital raised over $3800 for the American Heart Association's Triangle Heart Walk to prevent and treat heart disease.

United Way of the Greater Triangle: Durham Regional Hospital, along with Duke Medicine, once again participated in the United Way campaign to raise funds for various programs in the community during the fall of 2011.

Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina: In December 2011, Durham Regional Hospital had a collection for the North Carolina Food Bank. Employees donated 950 pounds of food, which will be used to operate food pantries, group homes, after-school programs, soup kitchens, shelters, elderly nutrition programs, and day cares.

Salvation Army: In December 2011, Durham Regional Hospital employees adopted 175 angels form the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program. Boys and girls in the community received bikes, dolls, and new clothes thanks to the generous donations.

March of Dimes: Each spring Durham Regional Hospital creates teams and raises funds for the March of Dimes. The March of Dimes is dedicated to improving the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. In 2011, Durham Regional raised $2300.

Sponsorships

Durham Regional is proud to sponsor a number of community programs and events, including:

Durham’s Operation Medicine Drop: Durham Regional Hospital was once again a site for Durham’s Operation Medicine Drop in March 2012.

The goal of Operation Medicine Drop is to protect children from potential drug overdose or drug abuse and ensure that collected empty plastic pill bottles are properly recycled. Our site collected a total of 13,263 pills.

Vial of Life: Durham Regional Hospital is a proud sponsor of the Durham County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Vial of Life program. This program ensures that important information is readily available to emergency responders in the event of a medical emergency during which a patient is unable to communicate.

Durham County EMS provides participants with a refrigerator magnet, a medicine bottle labeled Vial of Life, and a form. The form has areas for personal data, past medical history, allergies, advanced directives, current medications, and emergency contact numbers. Find out more about the Vial of Life program, including how to participate in the program, at www.vialoflife.com.

Museum of Life and Science: Durham Regional Hospital is proud to sponsor "Investigate Health!" Visitors have the chance to:

  • Run a crash test simulation to discover why experts recommend booster seats for children
  • Prove hand washing does remove germs
  • Use a camera that shows how sunscreen reflects UV light
