Duke University Health System is a world-class medical network dedicated to employing Duke's strengths in patient care, education, and research to enhance and improve health care throughout North Carolina and southern Virginia. The Health System delivers high-quality health services across the continuum of care through Duke University Hospital, an academic medical center consistently ranked among the top 10 in the country; two community hospitals, Durham Regional Hospital and Duke Raleigh Hospital; primary and specialty care clinics; home care; hospice; skilled nursing care; wellness centers; and community-based clinical partnerships.
As a member of the Duke University Health System, Durham Regional Hospital offers its patients access to the clinical expertise, capabilities, and quality and safety standards of Duke University Medical Center in a patient-oriented community setting. Durham Regional became part of the Duke system on July 1, 1998, when Duke signed an agreement with the Durham County Hospital Corporation to lease the county-owned hospital for 20 years. Under the agreement, Duke promised to uphold Durham Regional’s longstanding commitment to provide convenient, comprehensive services to Durham County residents, as well as its charitable commitments to Lincoln Community Health Center and the Durham County Emergency Medical Service. By working together, Duke and Durham Regional can leverage their strengths, operate more efficiently, and improve the quality of care for the citizens of Durham County and the surrounding region.
The 1998 lease between Durham County, Durham County Hospital Corporation and Duke University Health System for Durham Regional Hospital was extended from 20 years to an annually renewable 40-year term. This amendment took effect January 1, 2009.
