Bridget Koontz, M.D., was appointed medical director of the Division of Radiation Oncology at Durham Regional Hospital.
As the medical director, Koontz is responsible for the patient safety and quality of the unit, creating and reviewing policies with staff members, and increasing and updating technology. Koontz is also one of three primary radiation oncology specialists at Durham Regional Hospital.
Koontz is also an assistant professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Duke University Medical Center.
Koontz received a Bachelor of Science degree from Allegheny College and a Medical Degree from Harvard Medical School. She completed an internship in Internal Medicine at University of North Carolina Hospital and a residency in Radiation Oncology at Duke University Medical Center.
Koontz and W. Robert Lee, M.D., also a radiation oncologist for Durham Regional Hospital, are both trained in brachytherapy. This is a treatment where radioactive seeds or sources are placed in or near the tumor itself, giving a high radiation dose to the tumor while reducing the radiation exposure in the surrounding healthy tissues. Brachytherapy is being used at Durham Regional to treat prostate cancer.
The Division of Radiation Oncology at Durham Regional Hospital offers radiation treatment to adults, 18 years of age and older, who are diagnosed with various forms of cancer. Patients can benefit from specialists who work closely with medical oncologists and surgeons. A private parking lot, close to the entrance, is also available for patients. A number of new technology initiatives, including intensity-modulated radiation therapy, image guided radiation therapy and body radiosurgery will be added in the spring 2008.
