Durham- NC, Two Durham Regional Hospital nurses have each won a Triangle Business Journal Health Care Hero Award. Ashley Neville, RN, endoscopy department, was one of four winners in the nurse category and Margie Muir, RN, MSN, CNML, nursing program manager, was one of three winners in the nurse manager category.
Ashley Neville, of Creedmoor, has been with Durham Regional Hospital for more than seven years and was nominated because of her commitment to patient safety.
According to a nominator, “It was identified by a group of outpatient nurses that patients who have sleep apnea were at a higher risk for airway complication when receiving conscious sedation. Because of Ashley, a committee was formed and a policy was developed, approved and implemented. Altogether, from the time Ashley took this on as a project to the time it was approved by the committee took two years. This shows extreme dedication to something that isn’t even one of her expected job duties.”
Margie Muir, of Durham, has been with Durham Regional since 1997 and was nominated because of her work with the GEMS program (Graduates Engaged, Mastering & Succeeding).
According to her nominator, “The GEMS program is successful because of Margie. This program nurtures new nurses and allows them time to rotate through several units to determine which unit is the best fit, positively impacting their job satisfaction and nurse retention. Because of the GEMS program, Durham Regional has a 90 percent retention rate of new graduates while national rates for new graduate turnover average between 13 to 40 percent. In addition to the GEMS program, Margie is also appointed to lead, consult and assist with many other special projects for nursing.”
Neville and Muir were both honored at The Triangle Business Journal’s Health Care Heroes event on March 25 in Raleigh.
