DURHAM, NC- Durham Regional Hospital’s Emergency Department awarded the 2010 Vic Pearson Memorial Award to Ben Applebome, an EMT-intermediate with Durham Emergency Medical Services (EMS). This award is given annually to a paramedic who exemplifies the characteristics of Vic Pearson, a beloved paramedic with Durham County EMS who died in 1994. Pearson was described by his co-workers as clinically competent, distinctly professional and a compassionate practitioner.
Applebome has worked with Durham EMS for one year. As an EMT-intermediate, he provides pre-hospital emergency medical care, such as CPR, IV therapy, and bleeding control.
According to his nominator, “Although Ben has only been with us a short time, he has made an impact. When facing stressful situations with critical patients he handles himself with outstanding composure. I've seen him transform a patient that was extremely distraught and get her to communicate as if she was in a simple conversation with a friend. I believe Ben's best traits are his bed side manner with patients and his skill level. Ben shows a lot of compassion and competence in all he does.”
“It was a tremendous honor to receive the Vic Pearson Award, especially given the many outstanding paramedics and EMTs that I have the privilege of working with at Durham County EMS, said Applebome. “Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to know Vic Pearson, but my co-workers have always spoken very highly of him, and I feel truly honored to be presented with this award that commemorates his service and his exceptional qualities.”
