Forward Motion Joint Replacement Program

Injuries, arthritis, and the aging process can damage your joints. Over time, the cartilage that cushions your joints can break down, which exposes the bones.

When this happens, your bones start to rub together with every movement. The result is joint pain, stiffness, swelling, and loss of mobility.

If you are missing out on the things you love -- walking the dog, playing golf, gardening, or playing with the kids -- it may be time to consider a knee or hip replacement.

The Forward Motion joint replacement program at Durham Regional Hospital was developed by board-certified orthopaedic surgeons, orthopaedic nurses, nursing assistants, physical and occupational therapists, dieticians, case managers, and discharge planners.

This goal-based program can be tailored to your individual needs for a safe and successful recovery. This program includes:

  • A pre-operative education class
  • A printed guide for patients
  • A private room with flat screen TV
  • Nurses and therapists who specialize in the care of the orthopedic patient
  • A multi-modal approach to pain management
  • A physical therapist to help you increase your mobility and build strength
  • An occupational therapist to educate you on protecting the new joint and the use of assistive devices to get dressed and attend to your personal care
  • A discharge planner to ensure a thorough and safe discharge plan
  • Arrangement for equipment, if needed
  • Comprehensive discharge instructions

Forward Motion Pre-Operative Education Class

The Forward Motion pre-operative class is the beginning of your journey to return to a more active lifestyle. Please join us to get an overall vision of what to expect from pre-op testing to discharge.

Representatives from physical therapy, nursing, and discharge planning will be there to provide information and answer your questions. Bring a support person and we will help you get into "Forward Motion."
