The inpatient psychiatry department at Durham Regional Hospital is a secure 23-bed unit for adults, located of the sixth floor.
The department specializes in providing comprehensive treatment to patients admitted with a primary psychiatric diagnosis as well as co-morbid conditions. Primary diagnosis may include depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar, schizophrenia, and dual diagnosis and personality disorders.
Psychiatry at Durham Regional Hospital utilizes a multidisciplinary team approach consisting of a psychiatrist, social worker, recreational therapist, registered nurse, and nurse aide.
These professionals all work together to assess the patient, and work with input from the patient and their family to formulate a plan for treatment.
All patients are cared for in an accessible, secure, and safe environment that offers:
- Group, family, community, individual, and self-directed therapy
- Coping and social skills
- Practice with activities of daily living
- Psycho-education
- Psych-pharmacology
- Didactic groups
- Partial hospitalization
- Electro-convulsive therapy (ECT)
The psychiatry department provides intake service to Durham Regional Hospital emergency department and other outside referral sources 24 hours a day. The personnel consist of trained registered nurses under the supervision of the on-call psychiatrist.
Consult liaison psychiatry service provides psychological and psychiatric care to patients with medical and surgical conditions.
