Durham Rehabilitation Institute, located on the seventh floor of Durham Regional Hospital, provides award-winning, comprehensive care with the compassion and convenience found at a community hospital.

Our 30-bed inpatient unit specializes in short-term rehabilitation for patients with a wide range of conditions including, but not limited to:
- Stroke
- Spinal cord injury
- Amputation
- Major multiple trauma
- Total joint replacement
- Neuromuscular disorder
- Neck and back injury
- Traumatic and acquired brain injury
- Orthopedic injury

The large patient rooms on Durham Rehabilitation Institute were designed specifically to meet the needs of rehabilitation patients. Each room comes equipped with a television, telephone, Wi-Fi access, and a wheelchair-accessible bathroom with a roll-in shower.

Your treatment program will be led by a board-certified rehabilitation physician and a program manager. Other team members that may aid in your recovery include adult nurse practitioners, physician assistants, rehabilitation nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, recreation therapists, admission coordinators, registered dietitians, and other support staff.

Durham Rehabilitation Institute offers a state-of-the-art gym, including a suspension harness system to help patients walk again and an indoor car, adjustable to the height of patient’s vehicles, to help them readjust to getting in and out of their vehicle.

Durham Rehabilitation Institute therapists use a wide range of techniques for your therapy. Depending upon the patients needs, sessions can include playing Nintendo Wii, pool, or ping-pong. These activities help patients with balance and coordination, as well as cognitive and perceptual skills.

Located in the gym is a practice kitchen with standard and wheelchair-accessible equipment. Patients often use the kitchen during occupational therapy sessions.

Also in the gym is a home simulation area where patients can practice what life will be like when they return home. They can get used to walking on an area rug, turning on lamps, getting in and out of a regular bed, opening drawers, turning on electronic equipment (television, radio, alarm clock), and more.

Durham Rehabilitation Institute features on-site laundry facilities. Patients may wash and wear their own clothes during their stay.
